Don

Yarn Manager
The Sow’s Ear mourns the recent passing of beloved employee Don Himpel. Many of you knew Don as our yarn manager or simply as a smiling, friendly face at the yarn counter. Don came to us as a customer almost ten years ago, after relocating to the Madison area from Los Angeles. A longtime customer, Don became a Sow’s Ear employee in 2017. We knew Don to be a loving husband and father and our hearts are with his family.
Don had many crafty interests. He was a master of brioche knitting and enjoyed teaching classes at the Sow’s Ear, including the Dead or Alive fish hat. He loved Stephen West patterns and participated in many Stephen West knitalongs. He championed the men’s craft night on Wednesday evenings. Don launched a side business, Papa Sews Too, five years ago, utilizing his longtime sewing skills. His beautiful projects bags were sold locally at the Sow’s Ear and Knitcircus and online at his Etsy shop. A native of Kansas, Don was also a lover of country music.
We are heartbroken with this too sudden loss and plan to remember Don with a memorial gathering soon. Much love to Don’s family.
